Cleaning out Your Closet: 101

Cleaning out your closet isn’t the most glamorous task in the world. It’s time-consuming, and half of the time, I wind up keeping way too many things I know I’ll never wear again. However, I made the commitment that this spring, I would clean out my entire closet, and significantly reduce the amount of clothing I own. Because it’s such a tedious process, I thought I’d share some tips with you, to hopefully make your next closet clean-out less painful.

1). Separate your clothes into 3 categories: keep, donate, & throw away

Keep:

-Is it flattering?

-Can I modify it to wear year-round?

-Is it good quality?

Donate:

-Is it still in good shape?

-Does it fit?

_Is it still my style?

Throw Away:

-Is it dirty/stained?

-Is it ripped/torn?

These specific questions help make it easier to decide what is worth keeping, donating, or giving up on.

2). Organize your closet according to seasons

By organizing your closet by seasons, you can easily find what you need without having to dig for it. If you have your sundresses and short sleeve shirts hanging together, and it’s 100 degrees outside, odds are you’ll find what you’re looking for.

3). Consider selling some of your donated items

Sites like Poshmark are a great way to earn a little money back while cleaning out your closet, especially if the piece is still in good shape!

4). Keep your closet organized!

Once you’ve gone through all the trouble of cleaning out your closet, you want to make sure it stays that way! Here are some tips to help:

-Only buy 1-2 new pieces per month

-Invest in quality pieces that will last forever

-Always wait 48 hours before purchasing (just to make sure you really, really want it!)

What are your tips and tricks for keeping your closet clean and organized?
